Youngster Manav Suthar’s Ten-Wicket Haul Seals Emphatic 165-Run Victory for India

Date:

In a clinical display of Test match skill and persistence, India stormed to a 165-run victory over Sri Lanka in the series opener at the historic Galle International Stadium. Led by a generational spin performance from young left-arm orthodox spinner Manav Suthar, the visitors took a 1-0 lead in the two-match Test series just moments before heavy afternoon rain engulfed the venue.

Set a daunting target of 372 runs in the fourth innings, the hosts were bundled out for 206 in their second attempt. Suthar proved to be the unstoppable architect of Sri Lanka’s collapse, returning second-innings figures of 6/55 to complete his maiden 10-wicket match haul (10/131) in only his second Test match.

How Day 5 Unfolded: Breaking the Resistance

Resuming the final morning at an anxious 84/4, Sri Lanka began Day 5 hoping to bat out time and build on a fighting partnership between skipper Dhananjaya de Silva and first-innings centurion Sonal Dinusha.

  • The Captain’s Fight: De Silva and Dinusha frustrated the Indian attack for over an hour in the morning session, combining for a resolute 91-run stand for the fifth wicket. De Silva crafted a composed 59 before veteran spinner Ravindra Jadeja induced an edge on a sweep attempt, providing the crucial breakthrough India desperately sought.
  • Pace Strikes: Fast bowler Prasidh Krishna then capitalized on the momentum, dismissing Niroshan Dickwella with a targeted short ball that was slashed awkwardly behind to keeper Dhruv Jurel.
  • Lunch Interval: Sri Lanka reached lunch at 175/6, needing another 197 runs with just four wickets remaining.

Suthar’s Lethal Post-Lunch Burst

The final session belonged entirely to 24-year-old Manav Suthar, who turned the game on its head within minutes after the restart.

After Sonal Dinusha’s magnificent resistance ended on 84 when he was caught at leg-slip, Suthar turned on the magic. In a single devastating over (the 76th of the innings), the young spinner picked up three wickets in rapid succession—removing Dinusha, Prabath Jayasuriya for a first-ball duck, and turning one past Lahiru Kumara.

Suthar then administrative the final blow in his next over, deceiving Keshara Nuwantha off the pitch to shatter the stumps and seal a memorable Indian victory.

Statistical Legacy and Milestones

The victory in Galle marked a landmark moment for Indian cricket and set several individual and team records:

  • Record Figures in Sri Lanka: Suthar’s match figures of 10/131 eclipsed previous records held by Harbhajan Singh (10/153 in 2008) and Ravichandran Ashwin (10/160 in 2015) for the best match figures by an Indian bowler on Sri Lankan soil.
  • Youngest Asian Overseas Record: At 24 years and 16 days old, Suthar became the youngest Indian spinner to claim a 10-wicket match haul in an away Test match.
  • Historic Team Landmark: The match marked India’s 600th official Test match, making the 165-run win a historic celebratory milestone.
  • Batting Excellence: Devdutt Padikkal was awarded Player of the Match for his outstanding 167 in the first innings and crucial 44 in the second, anchoring India’s total of 462 and setting up the game.
  • Six-Hitting History: Wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant also created history during India’s second-innings push, becoming the first Indian and the fastest player in Test history to reach 100 career Test sixes.

Looking Ahead to Colombo

With a 1-0 series lead safely secured, Shubman Gill’s Indian side will turn their attention to the capital city. The second and final Test match of the series is scheduled to begin on Sunday, August 23, at the iconic R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.
